The Broken Crayon

Every Sunday afternoon, Mrs. Grace taught a small group of children at the village church. One day, she placed a new box of crayons on the table and asked everyone to draw something that reminded them of God’s love.

The children quickly picked the brightest and longest crayons. Soon, only a few short and broken pieces remained in the box.

A quiet girl named Ruth arrived late. Her mother had been ill, and Ruth had stayed home to help her before coming to church.

When Ruth looked inside the box, she saw only the broken crayons. Mrs. Grace felt sorry for her.

“Wait here,” the teacher said. “I will find you a new box.”

Ruth smiled and replied, “It is all right, Teacher. These crayons can still make something beautiful.”

She carefully picked up the broken blue, yellow, green and brown pieces. Slowly, she began to draw.

A few minutes later, Ruth showed everyone her picture. She had drawn a little church beneath a bright sunrise. A pathway led toward its open door, and people who were sad and tired were walking toward the light.

Mrs. Grace looked at the picture with tears in her eyes.

“How did you make something so beautiful with only broken crayons?” she asked.

Ruth held up a small blue piece and answered, “A crayon does not stop being a crayon just because it is broken. It can still colour the page.”

The classroom became silent.

Ruth continued, “My mother says we may sometimes feel broken because of sickness, sadness or failure. But Jesus does not throw us away. When we place our lives in His hands, He can still use us to bring hope to others.”

Mrs. Grace had prepared a lesson for the children that day. Instead, God used a child and a broken crayon to teach the lesson to her.

She placed Ruth’s picture on the classroom wall. Underneath it, she wrote:

“Broken does not mean useless when we are in God’s hands.”

From that day onward, Mrs. Grace never discarded a broken crayon. Whenever a child felt unimportant or discouraged, she pointed to Ruth’s picture and reminded them:

“God is not finished with you. He can still create something beautiful through your life.”

உடைந்த வண்ணக்கோல்

ஒவ்வொரு ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை பிற்பகலிலும் கிரேஸ் ஆசிரியர் கிராம ஆலயத்தில் சிறுவர்களுக்கு ஞாயிறு பள்ளி வகுப்பு நடத்துவார். ஒருநாள் புதிய வண்ணக்கோல் பெட்டியை மேசையின்மீது வைத்து, தேவனுடைய அன்பை நினைவூட்டும் ஒன்றை வரையும்படி குழந்தைகளிடம் கூறினார்.

குழந்தைகள் உடனே பிரகாசமான, நீளமான வண்ணக்கோல்களை எடுத்துக்கொண்டனர். சிறிது நேரத்தில் குட்டையான, உடைந்த சில வண்ணக்கோல்கள் மட்டுமே பெட்டியில் மீதமிருந்தன.

ரூத் என்ற அமைதியான சிறுமி வகுப்பிற்குத் தாமதமாக வந்தாள். அவளுடைய தாய் உடல்நலமில்லாமல் இருந்ததால், ஆலயத்திற்கு வருவதற்கு முன்பு வீட்டில் தாய்க்கு உதவி செய்திருந்தாள்.

ரூத் பெட்டிக்குள் பார்த்தபோது உடைந்த வண்ணக்கோல்கள் மட்டுமே இருப்பதைக் கண்டாள். கிரேஸ் ஆசிரியர் அவளுக்காக வருந்தினார்.

“இங்கேயே காத்திரு. உனக்கு ஒரு புதிய பெட்டியைக் கொண்டு வருகிறேன்,” என்றார் ஆசிரியர்.

ரூத் புன்னகையுடன், “பரவாயில்லை ஆசிரியரே. இவற்றாலும் அழகான ஒன்றை வரைய முடியும்,” என்றாள்.

உடைந்த நீலம், மஞ்சள், பச்சை மற்றும் பழுப்பு நிற வண்ணக்கோல்களை அவள் கவனமாக எடுத்தாள். பின்னர் மெதுவாக வரையத் தொடங்கினாள்.

“உடைந்த வண்ணக்கோல்களை மட்டும் பயன்படுத்தி இவ்வளவு அழகான ஓவியத்தை எப்படி வரைந்தாய்?” என்று கேட்டார்.

ரூத் ஒரு சிறிய நீல வண்ணக்கோலை உயர்த்திக் காட்டி, “ஒரு வண்ணக்கோல் உடைந்துவிட்டதால் அது வண்ணக்கோலாக இருப்பதை நிறுத்திவிடுவதில்லை. அதனால் இன்னும் காகிதத்தில் வண்ணம் தீட்ட முடியும்,” என்றாள்.

வகுப்பறை முழுவதும் அமைதியானது.

ரூத் தொடர்ந்து, “நோய், துக்கம் அல்லது தோல்வியால் நாம் சில நேரங்களில் உடைந்துபோனவர்களைப் போல உணரலாம் என்று என் அம்மா சொல்வார். ஆனால் இயேசு நம்மைத் தூக்கி எறிவதில்லை. நம்முடைய வாழ்க்கையை அவருடைய கரங்களில் ஒப்படைக்கும்போது, மற்றவர்களுக்கு நம்பிக்கை அளிக்க அவர் நம்மை இன்னும் பயன்படுத்த முடியும்,” என்றாள்.

அன்று குழந்தைகளுக்குப் பாடம் கற்றுக்கொடுக்க கிரேஸ் ஆசிரியர் தயாராகியிருந்தார். ஆனால் ஒரு சிறுமியையும் உடைந்த வண்ணக்கோலையும் பயன்படுத்தி தேவன் அவருக்கே ஒரு பாடத்தைக் கற்றுக்கொடுத்தார்.

ரூத்தின் ஓவியத்தை வகுப்பறைச் சுவரில் ஆசிரியர் மாட்டினார். அதன் கீழே இவ்வாறு எழுதினார்:

“நாம் தேவனுடைய கரங்களில் இருக்கும்போது, உடைந்தது பயனற்றது என்று பொருளல்ல.”

அன்றிலிருந்து கிரேஸ் ஆசிரியர் எந்த உடைந்த வண்ணக்கோலையும் தூக்கி எறியவில்லை. ஒரு குழந்தை தன்னைப் பயனற்றவனாகவோ மனமுடைந்தவனாகவோ உணரும்போதெல்லாம், ரூத்தின் ஓவியத்தைக் காட்டி நினைவூட்டினார்:

“தேவன் இன்னும் உன்னில் செய்து முடிக்கவில்லை. உன் வாழ்க்கையின் மூலமாக அழகான ஒன்றை அவரால் உருவாக்க முடியும்.”
