The Lamp That Would Not Go Out

In a small village lived a twelve-year-old boy named Samuel. Every evening, his mother lit an oil lamp near their window and prayed, “Lord, let this home be a light to someone in need.”

One night, a violent storm struck the village. Strong winds shook the trees, rain flooded the roads, and electricity failed everywhere. Samuel noticed that their oil was almost finished.

“Shall we put out the lamp?” he asked. “We may need it later.”

His mother replied gently, “Someone outside may need its light now.”

A few minutes later, Samuel heard a faint cry. Taking an umbrella, he followed the small light shining from their window. Near the roadside, he found an elderly man who had fallen in the mud.

Samuel helped him stand and slowly brought him home. His mother gave the man dry clothes, warm food and a safe place to rest.

The old man looked at the little lamp and said, “I had lost my way and nearly lost hope. Then I saw this light.”

By morning, the storm had passed. The lamp’s last drop of oil was gone, but sunlight filled the house.

Samuel’s mother smiled and said, “The lamp has gone out, but the light of Christ is still burning.”

Samuel understood that faith was not merely something spoken during prayer. Faith became light whenever someone showed kindness, offered hope or helped a person in need.

From that day onward, Samuel prayed differently:

“Lord, make my life a lamp that never goes out.”

அணையாத விளக்கு

ஒரு சிறிய கிராமத்தில் சாமுவேல் என்ற பன்னிரண்டு வயது சிறுவன் வாழ்ந்து வந்தான். ஒவ்வொரு மாலையும் அவனுடைய தாய் ஜன்னலருகில் ஓர் எண்ணெய் விளக்கை ஏற்றி, “ஆண்டவரே, உதவி தேவைப்படும் ஒருவருக்கு இந்த வீடு வெளிச்சமாக இருக்கட்டும்” என்று ஜெபிப்பார்.

ஒருநாள் இரவு கிராமத்தைப் பெரும் புயல் தாக்கியது. பலத்த காற்றில் மரங்கள் ஆடின. மழைநீர் சாலைகளில் பெருக்கெடுத்து ஓடியது. எங்கும் மின்சாரம் தடைப்பட்டது. வீட்டிலிருந்த விளக்கின் எண்ணெய் தீரப்போவதை சாமுவேல் கவனித்தான்.

“அம்மா, விளக்கை அணைத்துவிடலாமா? பிறகு நமக்குத் தேவைப்படலாம்,” என்றான்.

அவனுடைய தாய் மெதுவாக, “வெளியில் இருக்கும் ஒருவருக்கு இப்போது இந்த வெளிச்சம் தேவைப்படலாம்,” என்றார்.

சிறிது நேரத்தில் யாரோ மெதுவாக அழைக்கும் சத்தம் சாமுவேலுக்குக் கேட்டது. அவன் ஒரு குடையை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு, வீட்டின் ஜன்னலிலிருந்து தெரிந்த அந்தச் சிறிய வெளிச்சத்தின் உதவியுடன் வெளியே சென்றான். சாலையோர சேற்றில் விழுந்திருந்த ஒரு முதியவரை அவன் கண்டான்.

சாமுவேல் அவரைத் தூக்கி நிறுத்தி, மெதுவாகத் தனது வீட்டிற்கு அழைத்து வந்தான். அவனுடைய தாய் அந்த முதியவருக்கு உலர்ந்த ஆடைகள், சூடான உணவு மற்றும் ஓய்வெடுக்கப் பாதுகாப்பான இடம் கொடுத்தார்.

அந்த முதியவர் சிறிய விளக்கைப் பார்த்து, “நான் வழியை மட்டுமல்ல, நம்பிக்கையையும் இழந்துவிட்டேன். அப்போதுதான் இந்த வெளிச்சத்தைப் பார்த்தேன்,” என்றார்.

காலையில் புயல் ஓய்ந்திருந்தது. விளக்கின் கடைசித் துளி எண்ணெயும் தீர்ந்திருந்தது. ஆனால் சூரிய வெளிச்சம் வீடு முழுவதையும் நிரப்பியது.

சாமுவேலின் தாய் புன்னகையுடன், “விளக்கு அணைந்துவிட்டது; ஆனால் கிறிஸ்துவின் வெளிச்சம் இன்னும் பிரகாசித்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறது,” என்றார்.

ஜெபத்தில் பேசுவது மட்டுமே விசுவாசம் அல்ல என்பதை சாமுவேல் புரிந்துகொண்டான். ஒருவரிடம் அன்பு காட்டும்போதும், நம்பிக்கை அளிக்கும்போதும், தேவையில் இருப்பவருக்கு உதவும்போதும் விசுவாசம் வெளிச்சமாகிறது.
